Surprising Things at a Hotel in the US

Overseas stories

The rooms were comfortable, but…

This time, an expat secured a Hilton for me (I stayed at two locations, both Hiltons), and as you can see, the rooms were super clean. However, there were a few things that surprised me…

  • No slippers

Usually, I either pack slippers in my suitcase or save the ones provided as amenities on business class flights and bring them to the hotel. This time, knowing it was a Hilton, I just assumed there would be slippers and didn’t do either. Turns out, both places had no slippers! What?!

  • No daily cleaning/bed making

Well, strictly speaking, it’s not “none” at all, but I stayed at the first place for three nights, and on the first morning, the tip I specifically left was untouched. I thought, “Huh?” and realized the bed wasn’t made, and the trash hadn’t been emptied. I just figured maybe they forgot, but then I spotted a small notice written on the bathroom mirror. It said that for consecutive stays, full cleaning and bed making would be done on the 5th day, but if needed, you could contact the reception. I guess it’s true that I don’t really need it every day, and if I do, they’ll do it, so it makes sense. Maybe Japan could adopt something like this too?

Breakfast wasn’t buffet style, and there were no vegetables

When I went to the breakfast area, there were blackboards that said “Omelets” and “Hot Meals.” The only things you could freely take were bread and juices. Since there was someone behind the blackboards, it seemed to be an order-style breakfast. On the first day, I headed to the hot meals section, but it only had things like sausages, potatoes, bacon, and oatmeal. I was quite taken aback by the complete lack of vegetables. Plus, it’s a hassle to tell them the right amount, and if you just leave it to them, you get a ridiculous amount piled on your plate, which can be a bit disheartening first thing in the morning (chuckles).

But regarding vegetables, if you look closely, there are options like spinach, mushrooms, and tomatoes that you can mix into your omelet, so it’s not like you can’t get any veggies at all. The toasted bagels are also delicious, so, well, it’s not bad. However, the omelets are loaded with cheese, and the potatoes are deep-fried, so honestly, if I keep eating only this kind of stuff, I’m definitely going to gain weight!
