What’s Delicious in Hamamatsu? – Kanerin

Gourmet

“What’s Delicious?” is Always a Tough Question, Isn’t It?

My former colleagues were coming all the way to Hamamatsu to see me, and they wanted to eat something delicious. Honestly, this is always a challenge. It would be super helpful if they’d say, “I want to eat Hamamatsu Gyoza!” or “If it’s Shizuoka, then it has to be Sawayaka!” but no, it’s just “I want to eat something delicious!” Since multiple people were coming, I thought sushi would be a safe bet, but I also worried about individual preferences. Then I remembered that for Hamamatsu, eel (unagi) is a must. And just a little while ago, when I posted about unagi on Facebook, someone recommended “Kanerin” for eel in Hamamatsu. So, that’s where we headed this time: Kanerin.

No Reservations…?

So, I immediately called the restaurant to make a reservation, but they informed me that they generally don’t take reservations on weekends. They told me to write our names down on a list at the front of the shop 40 minutes before opening. So, I set the meeting time with everyone for around opening, and I pedaled my bike there a bit early. Oh boy, there was quite a line already… Since it’s far from the station and hard to access without a bus or car, I thought it might not be that crowded, but I was totally wrong. Good thing I came early!

Kimoyaki, Unakyu, and Unaju

That day, we had unaju (eel over rice), kimoyaki (grilled eel liver), and unakyu (eel and cucumber). Everything was truly delicious, but the moment we all tasted the kimoyaki, our eyes just widened in surprise. It was really amazing! My friends had drivers, and I was on my bike, so we couldn’t drink, but I totally understood when one of them just couldn’t resist yelling, “Sake!”

The fluffy unakyu was delicious, and the unaju was absolutely fantastic. The restaurant’s atmosphere was wonderful too. It really shows the great taste of Mr./Ms. I who recommended it! I’ll probably get in trouble if I don’t bring my family here next time.
