A flashy flyer at the hotel caught my eye. It looked like there was a food sample exhibition at a place called Enkei Theater in Kurayoshi, and the building itself seemed interesting, so I decided to check it out.

The Enkei Theater, as its name suggests, is a unique circular, or rather cylindrical, building. It used to be a school, and the former classrooms are now used as exhibition spaces. There are even some classrooms left as they were, giving you a glimpse into the past. The center of this cylindrical building houses a spiral staircase, and each classroom is arranged outwards from the center, which is a really interesting structure.

The food sample exhibition, which was my initial reason for visiting, was pretty standard, for better or worse. I felt like I’d seen similar displays elsewhere. However, what made it different and fun was how freely you could interact with the samples and take photos. You could even snap pictures of yourself “chowing down” on giant food samples!

What really surprised me (and I guess most people probably come here for this, lol) was the permanent exhibition of figures! There’s an enormous number of figures displayed by category, and seeing how incredibly detailed each one is, it really made me appreciate just how amazing Japanese craftsmanship is.

As for the figures, there are adorable Nendoroid-like ones, as well as incredibly detailed figures that pursue realism. Their quality truly amazes me!

And it’s not just figures! There are also exhibits of things I’d never seen before, like a Ushi-oni (ox demon) made from cardboard and a tiger made from striped safety rope. These were totally surprising too!
For more details, definitely check out the Enkei Theater Kurayoshi Figure Museum!
