The Alluring Uni Uni Festival… But Then…

Daily Reflections

A large LCD TV at Rishiri Airport’s small baggage claim area showed information about a “festival.” What caught my eye the most was the “Uni Uni Festival” happening on August 11th during my stay. I looked it up and found there’d be a sea urchin eating contest, and at the food stalls, you could feast on “grilled uni” and “mini uni rice bowls.” Besides uni, there’d be a lineup of fresh seafood unique to Rishiri… This sounded absolutely amazing, didn’t it…?

But, I had already decided to go to Rebun Island on August 11th.

Even so, since the festival was said to run from noon until around 8 PM, as soon as I returned to Oshidomari Port by ferry from Rebun Island, I headed straight to the venue.

The venue was filled with beer and sake, and it seemed like various events had settled down, with everyone already in high spirits. When I headed towards the food stalls, unfortunately, the grilled uni was sold out… but there was still just enough grilled scallops, which were cheap and incredibly delicious! I might have found more events if I had stayed until later, but I was nicely tired from Rebun Island and just felt like heading back to the hotel for a hot spring bath and a beer, so unfortunately, I retreated early.

I really wanted to try the uni eating contest and feast on lots of grilled uni…
