My colleagues asked me if I wanted to go for drinks, and they took me to Sake Bar Showa 31 Nendai. It’s tucked away on a super narrow alley in the heart of Hamamatsu, so hidden you’d never notice it! As you can see from the photo, the building itself has a really cool, rustic vibe, probably because it’s an old building from Showa 31 (1956), just like its name suggests.
It was such a fun drinking session that I regret not taking any photos, but the atmosphere inside the shop was really great too! The bright and cheerful proprietress runs the place. When you order sake, she brings several bottles of sake and the necessary number of small cups (ochoko), along with paper and a pencil. Here, it’s an honor system: you pour sake into your own ochoko and mark the number of drinks you’ve had on the paper using the “sho” character (正, a tally mark). There are plenty of snacks (otsumami) that go perfectly with sake, like dried horse mackerel (aji no hiraki) and dried firefly squid (hotaruika no himono). We had so many great conversations over these delicious bites.
I usually stick to beer, but lately I’ve been to a few get-togethers at places where you can really enjoy delicious sake. I’m starting to think that sipping sake slowly isn’t so bad after all!
