My Favorite Nagoya Routine is Vanishing…

Gourmet

I sometimes go to Nagoya for work. Whenever I’m there, for some reason, I always go to see Nana-chan, then head to Yabaton for tonkatsu, and afterwards, I buy Toraya Uiro as a souvenir. This classic route always involves Meitetsu Department Store.

To get to the restaurant floor at Meitetsu Department Store, there’s always this uniquely shaped escalator, just like in the picture. I always take it to Yabaton and order either their ‘Waraji Tonkatsu’ or ‘Hirekatsu’ with plenty of their rich, sweet sauce. But recently, I heard the news that Meitetsu Department Store will be closing in Spring 2026, and I’m low-key shocked.

I love Uiro too and always buy it as a souvenir, but the shelf life is short, and it’s a bit too much for one person to finish… Still, I can’t help but buy it, and devouring it all is part of the fun! Nagoya’s food culture feels a bit different from other places, and I just get drawn to it whenever I visit…
