When it comes to Kyoto souvenirs, for me, it’s always between Ajari-mochi and Yatsuhashi. To be honest, you can find Yatsuhashi just about anywhere, so I can just buy it whenever the mood strikes. But Ajari-mochi? I absolutely love it, yet it’s usually so hard to get your hands on. It’s often only stocked at certain department stores on specific days, so it’s not something I get to eat very often. That’s why if I happen to see it at a pop-up event or something, I find myself buying a ton of it, even though the shelf life is only about three days.
This time, I happened to find a stall selling Ajari-mochi at Hamamatsu Station. They only had the 10-piece boxes, and for a moment I hesitated, wondering if I could really finish that many by myself… but in the end, I bought it anyway.
I love them so much that I started snacking on them immediately and completely forgot to take a photo of what’s inside! Inside the individual wrapper, it looks a bit like a tiny pancake at first glance. Since the word “mochi” is in the name, some people might be surprised by its appearance. But when you hold it, it’s wonderfully moist, and once you take a bite, the chewy texture and the refined sweetness of the red bean paste are in perfect balance. No matter how many times I eat it, I never get bored—it’s truly a one-of-a-kind Japanese sweet.
If only it lasted a bit longer or could be frozen for later, I’d seriously buy a massive stash…
