One of the souvenirs I always make sure to buy on my way back from a trip to Hokkaido is Sato Suisan’s Rocky Salmon. I first discovered this product over three years ago. I distinctly remember being surprised by the sheer size of the smoked salmon in its clear packaging and, just from its looks, knowing it had to be delicious, so I bought it without hesitation.
However, for the past year or two, due to poor salmon catches, it disappeared from store shelves. I even searched online, but unfortunately, everything was consistently sold out. I tried buying similar frozen half-smoked salmon fillets, but Rocky Salmon has a unique tenderness and deliciousness, with rich, condensed oil oozing out despite being smoked. Honestly, nothing else could compare.
I was half-resigned to not being able to eat it for a while longer, but this winter, on my way back from a trip to Higashikawa, I stopped by the souvenir shop at Asahikawa Airport as usual and found it again after all this time! It had been about two years, I think? I was so thrilled that I bought two and even gave them as souvenirs when I went back home.
Everyone absolutely loved it! Even the skin, after you’ve eaten the flesh, is delicious if you slice it thinly and toast it in a toaster. You have to be careful not to overheat it, or you’ll get a lot of smoke, but I just can’t stop eating it. It’s truly a highly recommended item.
