Another Bout of Dizziness… Anxiety Living with Meniere’s Disease

Meniere disease

It started with sudden tinnitus two months ago. Learning then that Meniere’s disease is incurable, combined with the memory of being confined to a wheelchair for over a week, unable to stand due to dizziness and nausea, has left me with a deep anxiety about a possible recurrence.

Last Tuesday, after traveling to Hamamatsu in the evening and taking a short break, I suddenly felt a strong, swaying dizziness when I looked down. I wanted to believe it was temporary, partly due to fatigue, but from that moment on, the lightheadedness didn’t subside. Even worse, moving my head up and down triggered intense rotational vertigo, making it impossible to sleep.

This time, the dizziness was quite severe with head movements and sudden changes in posture, but if I stayed still, I only felt a floating sensation and slight nausea, which was manageable. So, I pushed through work on Wednesday and Thursday. However, since going down stairs was difficult and it was significantly impacting my daily life, I took Friday off and went to the hospital.

I underwent several tests, including a hearing test and checks for nystagmus with different postures. Fortunately, there was no hearing loss, but since the dizziness was constant, it didn’t seem to be “Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo” either. So, I was given medication and told to wait and see. Writing this while looking at the screen is still a bit tough, but I’m feeling much better compared to Friday, so I really hope I continue to recover…
