Dumpling-shaped Goheimochi… and a Set Meal?!

Gourmet

On the way back from Atera Valley, I had a little time during my transfer at Nakatsugawa Station, so I was looking at Google Maps for a light lunch. I found a restaurant called Goheimochi Kiraku near the station (there aren’t many other options close to the station…). I was drawn to it because it had very high ratings and offered a Goheimochi set meal, so I decided to check it out.

The shop was small, with only two or three tables. The previous customers were some local-looking uncles who occupied one of the tables, chatting enthusiastically about some local construction project. They were grilling goheimochi in a spot directly connected to the outside of the store, where they could handle takeout, and a delicious aroma wafted through the shop.

The Goheimochi set meal came with five goheimochi skewers, soup, and pickles. Personally, it was my first time seeing dumpling-shaped goheimochi, and since they looked just like mitarashi dango, I was quite surprised by this rather unique set meal.

The freshly grilled goheimochi were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Unlike their appearance, the sauce’s sweetness was subtle, and as a set meal, it was perfectly balanced. Due to my train transfer time, I couldn’t really linger. I was just focused on eating quickly and leaving, so I really regret not getting some for takeout… I wish I had at least bought some of that sauce!
