Following last week’s autumn leaves adventure, I headed to Tenryu-kyo Gorge. The scenery along the valley, with its vibrant red foliage, was indeed beautiful and lovely. However, perhaps because the “Dream Suspension Bridge” at Sumata-kyo Gorge last week was so incredibly striking, I felt a little unsatisfied… So, after finishing my stroll at Tenryu-kyo, I looked at the map and found something that caught my eye: the Ginkgo tree avenue in Wataba, Nakagawa Village.

Driving from Tenryu-kyo and crossing the Tenryu Bridge, a magnificent view of the Central Alps suddenly appeared before my eyes. Just beyond that, though not extensive, was a Ginkgo tree avenue whose vivid yellow leaves truly stood out. It seems to be a fairly well-known spot, as there were about 20 cars and motorcycles parked. What an incredible scene: vast rural landscapes with the autumn-colored Central Alps, topped with snow near the peaks, in the background.

Everyone visiting was leisurely enjoying this magnificent scenery, and it was impressive how it felt like time was flowing slowly, enriching my spirit. While moving around to take photos, I occasionally stepped on the many fallen ginkgo nuts, so their unique scent wafted through the air, and it was lovely to hear the children laughing cheerfully about it. That day, a clear blue sky stretched overhead, making it a wonderful view I wished I could gaze at forever.

Most people seemed to be enjoying just the ginkgo avenue itself, but I was really glad I decided to wander around a bit. I found lovely autumn scenery everywhere!

Tenryu-kyo Gorge was also quite a wonderful place! It’s a valley carved out by the fierce erosion of the Tenryu River. If you have time, you could enjoy a boat ride down the river through the gorge, but you can definitely enjoy the main parts by simply walking the promenade. The valley itself felt like a true tapestry of autumn colors, but it was a bit of a shame that the vivid red maple leaves I saw along the promenade weren’t as prominent right along the riverbanks.
