DANT KANTI: The Mysterious Ayurvedic Toothpaste from India

Overseas stories

Ayurvedic Toothpaste?

I vaguely remembered my wife mentioning how an Indian toothpaste she got from a friend was surprisingly good. So, while I was on a business trip to India, I did a little research for souvenir ideas and found out about Ayurvedic toothpastes. I was curious, so I picked up two types of DANT KANTI at a convenience store in the airport.

One is Bright Red…

Luckily, the packaging had English on it, mentioning ingredients like cinnamon and cardamom. I thought, “Oh, this sounds like it might actually taste good,” but when I opened it, I was shocked to find it was bright red! Seeing that on a toothbrush is quite an intense experience.

A Truly Unique Flavor

When I tried it, the flavor was… well, unique. Let’s just say the cinnamon and cardamom felt like they were very far away. It’s hard to describe, but it feels like a little piece of India just expands in your mouth (lol). That said, it does leave your mouth feeling very fresh, and once you get used to the flavor after a few tries, it’s not an issue at all. My only gripe is that the foam turns pink, which makes me panic for a second thinking my gums are bleeding…

Is the Other One Chocolate Paste?

I haven’t tried the second one I bought yet, but writing this post made me curious, so I decided to take a peek. I was surprised again—it’s a brown paste! It looks just like the chocolate spread you’d put on bread. I’m actually really looking forward to trying this one (lol).
