A Station Filled with Marimekko

A Station Adorned with Marimekko Fabric Panels

I already knew that the Tenhama Line had trains with Marimekko curtains and stuff, but I’d seen a TV show about a station where the walls were covered in Marimekko fabric panels and really wanted to check it out. Since I woke up at some weirdly early hour on Saturday morning, I figured the roads would be clear and headed out on my bike.

Vivid Marimekko Fabrics Suddenly Appearing in the Countryside

The area around Miyakoda Station on the Tenhama Line is a lovely rural spot with the Miyakoda River nearby. It’s a great place for cycling. And then, out of nowhere, this station appears. On the outside, you’ve got Unikko and other instantly recognizable Marimekko fabrics. Peeking inside the station building, you can see it’s decorated with fabric panels. Wow, this is impressive.

Since it was before 6:00 AM on a Saturday, the station was empty. This space must be a dream for anyone who loves Scandinavian design, right? The chandelier is even decorated with hammers, which shows a fun, playful touch.

It was too early for it to be open, but there’s a cafe attached to the station building, and it’s also completely Marimekko-themed.

The platform side is also beautifully decorated with Marimekko fabric panels. The renovation really makes the most of the old station building, creating a wonderful atmosphere. Most Tenhama Line stations are old, but each one has its own unique charm and character. Visiting them one by one is really fun—I highly recommend it.

The cafe has seats facing the platform, too, so you can enjoy the Marimekko designs from there as well.

While I was soaking in the atmosphere, a train decorated with familiar Marimekko designs pulled in. As you can see, the interior—including the curtains—is all about Marimekko.

I felt totally satisfied just visiting this station, but I found out later that it’s actually just one part of the “Dlofre’s Campus.” Miyakoda Construction has been developing the area to blend Japanese and Scandinavian styles. There are plenty of other facilities and sights to see. They even have lodging, so I’d love to stay there for a relaxing getaway sometime.
